IST project BREAD “Broadband For All A Multidisciplinary Approach”
and the Wibrace forum (www.wibrace.org)
Wireless access is experiencing the migration to an "all IP" infrastructure, the introduction of audiovisual content on fixed and mobile network, and the progressive apparition of storage on fixed and mobile terminal. Moreover, the new regulation rules lead to a natural evolution of broadcasters, telecom operators and mobile operators towards the role of "quadruple play" operators handling fixed and mobile services. These trends and the necessity to transport both broadcast and interactive content on the same network, have led to the definition of so called cooperative and hybrid infrastructures. On the R&D and standardization front the different communities have defined their own architectures, namely DVB-CBMS, 3G-MBMS, OMA-BCAST, WIMAX mobile. On the satellite front, several initiatives are ongoing like S-DMB or DVB-SSP. The same trends occur in fixed infrastructure, and are reflected in TISPAN and the evolution of Packet Cable.
The workshop covered different aspects of these broadcast-broadband convergence aspects for fixed and mobile, like architectures, gap analysis, new services and business models for the different alternatives.
